Sanbon Kumite

As a basic training method, Sanbon Kumite (Three-step Kumite) is identical to Gohon Kumite in terms of the benefits it offers with regard to the development of "Migamae", "Kigamae", "Unsuku", breathing (Kokyu Ho) and physical power (Kime).

The attacks are performed consecutively with a different technique at a different level (Jodan, Chudan and Gedan), three times “Jodan Zuki", "Chudan Zuki" and "Mae Geri”. The defender, each time, uses an adequate blocking technique and counters immediately after the third Uke with Kiai.

We would like to remind you that in Gohon Kumite, the attacker repeats the same attack 5 times (Jodan or Chudan) at a same level. The defender uses the same blocking 5 times and counter-attacking (Gyaku Zuki) immediatelyafter the last one with Kiai.

In comparison to Gohon Kumite, it does not develop to the same extent, the physical resistance and "Migamae" but mostly focuses on "Kigamae" (mental preparation) and developing balance during movements. The advantage of this KUMITE lies in its effectiveness as a complete training method to maintain the balance during a continuous movement and it should be executed from both sides.

Execution Method

Like Gohon Kumite, the attacker must keep the "Migamae" and "Kigamae" and he must warns the defender by saying: “Jodan, Chudan, Mae Geri”, then concentrating his mind on the lower abdomen, attacks suc-cessively with forcefulness and with concern for accuracy. Both Semete (attacker) and Ukete (defender) must always possess the fighting spirit and make it explode in each attack and defense. The defender, with an equal determination must observe carefully the breathing and movement of his opponent.

Sanbon Kumite should always be practiced from both left and right sides.

Breathing

Proper breathing is essential for both Semete (attacker) and Ukete (defender). Whether in attacking or blocking, each must inhale during the first three-quarters of each step and exhale during the final quarter steps while simultaneously performing either the attacking and or blocking technique. This way of breathing is called "Gyaku Shiki Kokyuho" (breathing the opposite way).
